Bonifacio

France / Corse / Bonifacio /
 city, seaport

The most southerly town on the island of Corsica is perched precariously on a narrow rock that has been hollowed out from below by the waves over the centuries. The bluff is surrounded by water on three sides. Down in the bay of Bonifacio is the district of La Marine with the small harbor. Ville Haute, as the Old Town itself is called, features narrow alleyways and tower-like buildings that bear witness to earlier sieges. Many homes still have wells and cisterns along with food storage rooms. Steep wooden stairs that could be quickly pulled up in moments of danger lead to the first story of the houses.
