island, region, invisible, first-level administrative division
Corsica is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily, Sardinia, and Cyprus). With the white limestone near Bonifacio, red granite rock in the Calanche and green wilderness of the Castagniccia, it is not surprising that the Greeks once called Corsica "Kalliste", meaning "the beautiful". The island not only features wide beaches and small swimming coves along a strikingly beautiful coastline, but it also has mountains and green forests that have somehow retained their unspoiled state despite the continued encroachment of civilization. Napoleon, Corsica's most famous native son, was born in Ajaccio in 1769, but he left his island home only ten years later, in 1779. After his military successes he assumed power in France and, in 1804, had himself crowned Emperor. After the "great Corsican" failed in his Russian Campaign of 1812 and the Battle of Nations at Leipzig in 1813, he was exiled to Elba. He escaped and returned to power a year later, but lost at Waterloo in 1815. He eventually died in exile on the island of St Helena.
