Glenn Dale Hospital

USA / Maryland / Lanham-Seabrook /
hospital, abandoned / shut down, tuberculosis / TB hospital

The Glenn Dale Hospital is a sprawling abandoned complex that sits on 216 acres of Maryland’s Prince Georges County. It was originally built as a tuberculosis hospital with two main buildings––one for adults and one for children––plus many smaller outlying facilities. After tuberculosis epidemics were largely curbed, the complex remained in operation as a general hospital. Glenn Dale opened its doors in 1934 and remained in operation for roughly fifty years, finally closing down for good in 1982 due to questions of structural integrity and the presence of large amounts of asbestos. Today the hospital’s many buildings sit crumbling and decaying, full of furniture and equipment left over from the facility’s years of operation. Among the still standing buildings are the original children’s hospital, the massive main adult hospital, as well as laundry buildings, guard buildings, and nurses’ quarters. Many of the buildings are connected by underground tunnels that were used to transport patients and materials over the vast complex without having to go outside, especially during the cold winter months.

The buildings have been vandalized heavily in the two decades they have been abandoned. Many of these vandals are thrill-seekers who have explored Glenn Dale after hearing the dozens of legends surrounding the buildings.

One of the most enduring rumors about Glenn Dale is that during its later years it was used as a hospital to house the criminally insane. Stories are told that upon the hospital’s closing, some of these deranged lunatics were simply released onto the streets. With no family to speak of and no idea of where to go, they found their way back inside the abandoned buildings and now call them home. In the darkest recesses of these ramshackle structures reside some truly insane individuals––or so the stories say.

Another tale claims that the hospital had to be abandoned due to an overwhelming epidemic of tuberculosis that killed most of the patients and staff of the hospital and infected the very building itself. Explorers should be careful, the story says, as touching any of the remnants of the building’s past could expose them to this deadly disease. While this is untrue, it is once again worth mentioning that the buildings are in fact overrun with asbestos and do pose a threat to the health of adventurous visitors.

Many late night explorers to Glenn Dale report hearing strange noises and even seeing ghosts. Many say that the spirits of those patients who died while residents of the hospital remain today, haunting the halls of the now abandoned buildings. Not surprisingly, many people report experiencing odd occurrences in the vicinity of the morgue, located in the bowels of the main adult hospital building.

Glenn Dale hospital is a no trespassing area regularly patrolled by Prince Georges County police as well as park police that live in a facility on the grounds.

  • I loved going to this place when I was in my teenage years. Definitely fun to go to, but I know a lot of dumb people went there as well and ruined it. :(
  • that story has almost scotched my chances of going there as a thrill seeker. im surprised that zev was not not arrested or anything, considering she was actually caught. and whats more, the policeman actually went in there with her (him?)?!?!?
  • My buddy and I went there quite a few times, all throughout the hospital side closest to the water tower (because the police outpost thing on the other side of the street). Flash lights in hand, went all throughout that place, in the basement, tunnels. It was awesome. Pretty scary for two pre/early teens. Never saw any ghosts, or heard anything strange. I'd like to go again sometime, but I've lived away from MD for 10 years.
  • Still love right down the street. Sometimes homeless people are there, and I've found some *cough* questionable DVD's in the area. It's really structurally unsound now but great for creepy photo's on the outside. I'll steer pretty clear now and try to spread the word about the asbestos
  • I was there Saturday night with my two friends and cousin, just the look of the hospital freaked me out, the feelin of just being there freaked me out. it felt like a crowd of unhappy people staring at us through the windows. We kept hearing dog collars like the jingle of the collars and i read that there is a pack of ghost dogs there. We went in the building and saw how it looked but when we flashed the light there was a person staring at us , Us FOUR ALL SAW IT! and thats when we ran out and left. never again well i go back. that is plenty of peoples homes that died there and im not gonna mess with them.
  • I actually went to the hospital today with a few of my buddies. I've been there almost 10 times in the past 6 months and been in almost every building and every floor of the buildings. I deffinetally think the childrens ward gave me a weird vibe.Today me and my friends took a Ouaiji board or however you spell it inside one of the smaller building beside the main hospital (behind the police trailer) It moved a lot and scared the shit out of us, we also heard people walking around and that scared us more.i have a lot of pics from glendale and a couple of them have some pretty unexplainable things in them. I also went there on Halloween and there was a cop car in the same place we parked. We kinda hinted to him that we were going in and he seemed cool and knew we were he just said be careful because the building is unsafe. Glenndal hospital is a beautiful creation and I wish people didn't vandalize it
  • I have been there for times and I still am in love with this place the 4th time I went was the scariest though D:. It was me my cousin tony and a 2 more people (My friend Tom) (and daniel) We went there last Friday and drove onto electric avenue. There is a small parking area there that's a memorial and a hill... I think on the left side. But we climbed up through a small stretch of woods and went through a broken window there were bank checks all scattered around and medical equipment. We went too the auditorium and Me and tony kept on seeing heads float across the entrance on the 2nd floor we kept hearing something follow us from the 3rd to 2nd down too the basement are of the morgue and when we went into the crematorium we could actually hear screaming from the childrens ward if anyone wants too go again let me know It's just I don't have a car but I can pitch up for gas
  • i want to know if that acully happen when he shot at somthing and got bit in hand
  • Does anyone know the address to this place? I wanna go so bad!
  • I would like to know the total estimated deaths that occured in the adult and childrens hospitals over the 50 years of operation.
  • Its hard to believe that I used to hang out here 30 years ago. I still live nearby and it looks nothing like it did back then. It was still relatively new then and not nearly as trashed. Still abandoned though. No police to deal with just a short stout man who kept watch in a building on the other side. It was pretty easy getting in and out in those days. People would come to party. Most just came to get scared. I heard all the stories and myths but, it didn't matter. At the time, I thought the smaller building was the "insane asylum" but, apparently it was the children's ward. I will agree. I couldn't stay in there longer than a few minutes and that was the 80s We did walk through there and across that bridge connecting the two buildings but, it made me feel sick. The main hospital is a different vibe altogether. It seems harmless and NO, there was NO craziness involving the morgue. It was pretty gross but nothing more. We used to go to the top of the main hospital and sit for hours looking at the stars. You can't do that now. The best day I ever had there was when I snuck in during broad daylight with my boyfriend. Once we got in, it was awesome to look at the place in the light where you can see everything. We found really interesting stuff. Funny what you see when you aren't scared. The place is still there but, its rundown and heavily guarded. The police don't mind entertaining people who are generally interested but, of course they stick around to make sure no one gets hurt.
  • why are there no photos of when it was still open??????
  • Is there any way to obtain a list of Patients that were housed in Glen Dale. My Grandmother had TB. When I can remember, she was in a TB hospital near Thurmont Maryland. Later she was sent mount Wilson. I am trying to find out where she was before Thurmont.
  • I am heading there next month.. for my birthday! I know what a way to spend your birthday..
  • I was there in the 80's There was tons of interesting stuff. Everything from equine to patient files to toys to donated items. The roof had a beautiful view. I loved that place. We never found the cemetery. Do you know if there is one?
  • What did the cops do? I am going soon and curious as to what repercussions follow being caught.
  • No, they burned the bodies in the crematorium.
  • Have you ever found out anything? I had a great grandfather there but cannot find any info, including death records through ancestry.com, etc Thanks
  • I recently found out that I had a great grandfather there also. My aunt says that there is a cemetery on the grounds and they did have records of who was buried in what section. She went out there looking for his headstone but it started raining & she had to leave. I'd love to know where the records are being stored.
  • Although your comments VERY old, i wanna check the place out. I tried October, 2013 but was caught by police only minutes after running across the hill next to the childrens ward. Tips on how to get in and put safely? Not trying to get asbestos poisoning either. Lol
  • Just went there last week, went at around 4 or 5 ish in the pm so we could explore the building without a flashlight. Go up on electric avenue and theres a like a mushy clay like hill that we climbed up, snuck through the woods and into the building. We didnt see anybody patrolling the place, were there for a good 4-5 hours. Place is extremely freaky A bathroom door on the top floor just started slamming over and over again until we ran away lolol.. At the end of our tour there was a police car that went and searched the grounds. So just be smart about it and try not to flash any flashlights around the roads. As or the asbestos, theres nothing you can really do unless you have a gasmask, We wore regular doctors masks just because of all the dust and who knows what lying around in there. Oh and I you go into the buildings make sure you watch your step on the stairs, some of them are missing. I didnt see one was missing and went straight through, hurt like a bitch but at least i didnt get cut by anything. Also one of the wooden buildings already collapsed, might not be wise to go into any smaller buildings made of wood.
