Talamone | town, frazione

Italy / Toscana / Orbetello /
 town, frazione

Small port, has some mercantile activity, and tourism boat marina. Some restaurants in the historical center. There is a nice walk to the top of the old city, with its old walls facing dramatic vistas of the coastline below. Just 0.5 km north of the town is a small rocky cove, Bagno delle Donne, where the locals go sunbathing and swimming.

An archeological remnant from ancient Roman times that is about 2 km south-east is the Frontone di Talamonaccio. Also, in the vicinity of this archeological ruin is the trail head to several trails leading north towards the summits of the Monti dell'Uccellina, as part of the trail system of the Parco Naturale della Maremma. Unfortunately, entry tickets are necessary and must be purchased for about 5 euros per person in the park's office in Alberese (that is a 30 km round trip drive).

This small port made the news during the Reagan administration during the "Iran-Gate" congressional hearings investigating arms sales to Iran because it was the port chosen by Oliver North to load the ships with weapons. Indeed, the smallness of the port played a role in such choice.
