Built for the USSR, this vessel was never given to the customer, though, due to the WW2. So, it became a part of the Japanese fleet and participated in a number of scientific expeditions, and, when with the Navy, was used for supplying.
Being an icebreaker boat, it ventured into ice-covered waters both as a supply ship and a research vessel.
