The first documentary evidence of a Christian church in Heavitree is dated 1152, in a record of the grant of the church to Exeter Cathedral. The first documentary evidence of Heavitree having its own priest is when Bishop Bronescombe instituted John de Christenstow in 1280. The church was altered in the 14th Century, rebuilt in the 15th Century, with a nave of six bays, restored in 1541 during the later years of Henry VIII's reign and enlarged and completely rebuilt in 1846. During this rebuilding galleries were placed over both aisles, but these were removed in the early 1920's.
