Higher Cemetery was opened on 26 March 1866. The cemetery has been expanded on at least three occasions since then and now occupies an area of 18 hectares (37 acres). In excess of 70,000 individuals are buried here with some 12,000 memorials remaining.
Dog owners are discouraged from bringing their pets to the cemetery (excluding guide dogs) - this is because people attending funerals and burials, as well as visitors in general, can sometimes be offended by the presence of dogs.
