This installation was part of the United States Army Garrison Gießen (Giessen). The Heliport/Airfield was announced to be returned to German control 18 September 1990.

Little is known about the history of Ockstadt Army Airfield to date. It was also used by a civil flying club until it moved to Bad Nauheim in 1984 due to plans to build a road trough the airfield. It was most probably built by the US Army in the early 1950s like many other small airfields/airstrips that belonged to most mayor barracks and it looks similar to other airfields constructed by the US Army after the war. Later it was renamed Friedberg Heliport. It became disused in the late seventies and was finally closed 25 July 1991.
[12/08/2010] I was stationed here from Mar 1955 to Jun 1956.The facility was called the Friedberg Airstrip and appeared to be more than a few years old. The word 'heliport' had yet to be coined. It was manned by the Air Sections of the RHQ Companies of the 8th Infantry Regiment and its 29th Field Artillery and the 22nd Infantry Regiment and its 44th Field Artillery.{All part of the 4th Infantry Division} There were 2 H-13 helicopters and 4 L-19 airplanes.Soldiers of the 8th and 29th were stationed at Ayers Kaserne in Friedberg. The soldiers of the 22nd and 44th were stationed in Kirchgoens but were TDY to the Ayers Kaserne and the Airstrip. In bad weather if the twin towers of the church in Ockstadt could be seen, visibility was good enough to fly! A German glider club used the runway occasionally on Sundays.
