Cardinal O'Hara High School was founded as an all-boys school in 1961 with the assistance of the Franciscan Friars. The school became coeducational in 1971, when Bishop Gibbons High School closed and many of its students transferred to Cardinal O'Hara. At that point the Felician Sisters joined in support of the school and have remained after the departure of the Franciscans in 1989.
