A train station of JR West and JR Central. Served by the Tokaido Sinkansen, the Tokaido Main Line (Kyoto and Biwako lines), the Nara Line and the Sanin Main Line (Sagano Line).
The current building was fininshed in 1997 and designed by Hiroshi Hara and sports an irregular cubic facade of reflective plate glass over steel, which makes it stand out from the more traditional Kyoto architecture.
