Conway Colony historic site (Yellow Springs, Ohio)

USA / Ohio / Yellow Springs / Yellow Springs, Ohio / Corry Street
place with historical importance, interesting place

A historic site marker on this spot describes the extraordinary story of Moncure Daniel Conway and the Conway Colony.

Moncure Conway was the abolitionist son of a slave owning family in Virginia. When his family's slaves were freed during the chaos of the Civil War, he traveled south to help bring them to safety. Stories differ on the exact number of people involved, but between 30 to 90 newly freed slaves made the dangerous wartime journey by rail through the slave state of Maryland.

Dunmore and Eliza Gwinn were considered the leading members of the colony, and their family homestead was located just to the east of the historic marker. A number of Yellow Springs residents trace their ancestry to the Gwinn family.
