residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, Second Empire (architecture)
Residence built c. 1870 in the Second Empire Style by John W. Ritch for Edward H. Swan, Sr on the site of a home that had been destroyed by fire in 1858. Edward Swan was a founding member of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. The house is a classic example of the Second Empire style with its arched windows and mansard roof. Later owned by Van Santvoord Merle-Smith, Sr. who called estate "The Paddocks" and later by William Harris Mathers. The house much later became the home of tennis star John McEnroe Jr. and his wife Tatum O'Neal. In January of 1990, the property had the dubious distinction of serving as a makeshift morgue when Avianca Flight 52 crashed into the hills nearby after running out of fuel.
The estate home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
