Built in 1905, the Birch Bayh Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse house the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. It was originally built to house Federal courts, offices, and the main city post office. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The exterior is of Indiana limestone and is detailed in Beaux-Arts architectural style, popular for its time.

The trial scene for the 1988 film "Eight Men Out" was filmed in Court Room 202 of the building.
