lock (water navigation), bridge
This sluice is part of the canalsystem that goes from Delfzijl through Groningen and Friesland till Harlingen and even Amsterdam over the IJsselmeer. There are transportships and recreational ships, mainly in the summertime, also coming from Germany, United Kingdom, Denmark, Belgium, France.
There are two bridges on the north and south side of the sluice that open alternately, so that the landtraffic can go on during the sluicing.
The rests of the two old bridges are conserved and are visible at the westside of the sluice.
