Built in 1991 to replace the Cold War-era radar site at Rockville Aircraft Control & Warning Station, Keflavik Air Station went online in 1992 and assumed both the roles and callsign (H-1/LOKI) of its predecessor station. Manned by the 932d Air Control Squadron under and NATO operation the station was tasked with identifying, monitoring and directing interceptor aircraft to all all Soviet aircraft in transit in and from the Greenland-Iceland-UK (GIUK) Gap via the NAS Keflavik Radar Operations Control Center (ROCC). For this task, the facility was equipped with an AN/FPS-117 v5 radar system housed in a single radome.

Performing this role through the fall of the Soviet Union and years beyond, the facility was idled in its military role in 2006 as part of the closure of United States military facilities in Iceland, officially going offline at 1534 Zulu on July 12, 2006 and being turned over to civilian operation on 28 June 2006. With its military radar replaced with a civilian Air Route Surveillance Radar (ARSR) shortly thereafter, the facility now functions as a commercial air traffic monitoring site for Iceland and the North Atlantic aviation routes.
