Portsmouth

United Kingdom / England / Portsmouth /
 city, draw only border

The city of Portsmouth is the second largest settlement in Hampshire and the home of the British Navy. It is the UK's only Island City as it lies mostly on Portsea Island. It is the most densely populated city in England after London.

The original Roman settlement on the Harbour was built on the north side in the area now known as Portchester. When the Normans came they continued to control the harbour from this point. Later however, there were developments on Portsea Island. The original Portsmouth town centre is in the area now called Old Portsmouth. The old walls against the sea which helped defend the town still survive.

The railway arrived during the Victorian era; the town had a cathedral built and received city status during the 20th Century. It was targetted during World War II. Recent regeneration works saw the building of the Gunwharf Quays Shopping Centre and Spinnaker Tower.
