Founded in 1912, Bank of China (BOC) is one of the big four state-owned commercial banks of the People's Republic of China. It is the second largest lender in China overall, and the 5th largest bank in the world by market capitalization value. It is the most international of China's banks, with branches on every inhabited continent with operations in 27 countries outside of mainland China. However, its operations outside China accounted for less than 4% of the activity of the bank by both profits and assets. Mainland China accounts for 60% of the bank by profits and 76% by assets as at December 2005.
In Malaysia, Bank of China established its first branch in Penang in 1937. Its branch network had gradually expanded to five, with the other four situated in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Seremban and Batu Pahat. However, due to the Japanese conquest of Malaysia (formerly known as Malaya) in 1942, has forced BOC to close all of its branches, agencies, sub-branches and sub-agencies in the country. With the rapid economic and trade development between Malaysia and China, together with the supports of the two Governments, Bank of China (Malaysia) Berhad (BOCM) officially re-commenced business on 23rd February 2001.
