Church of the Icon of the Mother of God (the Sign) (Moscow)

Russia / Moscow / Moscow / ulitsa Varvarka
cathedral, interesting place, Russian Orthodox Church, 17th century construction, object of cultural heritage of federal importance (Russia)

This church is part of the former Monastery of Our Lady of the Sign, which was built between 1675 and 1684 by peasant serfs from Kostroma.

The father of Mikhail Romanov, the first Romanov tsar, constructed the monastery on the grounds of the family estate that once extended all the way to the river. Fyodor Romanov had been accused, on trumped up charges, of being the ringleader in a plot against Boris Godunov. When "discovered," he was forced to renounce his political intentions and made to take monastic vows. Later with Mikhail as tsar, Filaret as he was called after taking vows, became patriarch of the Russian Orthodox church and his son's closest advisor. Rather than return to the family home, he became abbot of the Znamensky Monastery founded in the 1631 in honor of the birth of Mikhail's son Aleksei and endowed by Mikhail's mother.
