The school first dates back to starting in the ballroom of local resident Clarence Brown who founded the school in 1919 with seven children and a separate set of parents holding classes in the Nassau Country Club. In 1920, the two schools merged and brought on B. Lord Buckley as the headmaster. In 1923, twenty-five acres along Northern Boulevard was purchased by Robert Winmilll and in 1929 a little over thirteen acres were purchased at a cost of $900 an acre. Today there are forty acres of property. The noted firm of Peabody, Wilson and Brown designed the school and after much discussion it was decided to name it The Green Vale School. In 1923, tuition ranged from $400 to $600 a year. Many notable Long Island socialite families sent their children to attend.

Some notable alumnus are Henry Clay Frick whose family owned "Clayton" in Roslyn, Nedenia Marjorie Hutton (later Dina Merill) daughter of Marjorie Post, Gloria Vanderbilt, Lillian McKim Rousseau (later Lilly Pullitzer), Cecily Pennoyer, and the children of the Savage and Davidsons {Peacock Point}. Currently, Green Vale educates nursery though ninth grade and remains a prosperous private school.
