Fort Branch was an earthen Confederate fort of the American Civil War (1861-1865) that served to protect a vital rail crossing that connected Richmond and Raleigh.

8 of the 12 heavy guns that protected the fort have been recovered from the river and restored, but not re-mounted.
That makes the fort one of the few in the south that still has its original wartime armament.
