castle, ruined castle, fort, Roman Empire, historic remains
Built by the Romans as part of their Saxon shore defences (late third or early fourth centuries).
The north and east walls are mostly intact. The southern wall is partly intact and partly ruins. The west wall has fallen down the bank and into the River Waveney and surrounding marshland.
Although known as Burgh Castle it is thought to be one of two possible sites of Gariannonum Saxon Shore Fort (the other option being nearby at Caister-on-Sea).
