Why does everyone stare when you walk in? Picture this: You've just walked in the door and all pairs of bespectacled, disaffected eyes are on you. Slowly realizing they've been blatantly staring, the faux-sullen 20-somethings quickly look away. You feel self-concsious but pretend not to while you try your best to ignore everyone. While pretending they didn't see you the other patrons oh so nonchalantly raise the volume of their conversations, indicating that, although they are desperately conflicted and brilliant, they are also extremely modest to the point of reclusion in - addition to being achingly intelligent/witty/irreverent - when in reality it is all too obvious to you that they are hiding a fervent need for attention and approval. All this is happening while you overhear a debate at the next table about whether Modest Mouse or Death Cab For Cutie best represents meticulously coiffed bed head.

For the life of you, you do not understand where this culture of "I'm looking at you, but I'm not REALLY looking at you" passive aggressive spotlight-seeking behavior comes from! You would love to know.
