Chinatown (Vancouver)

Canada / British Columbia / Vancouver
 heritage, neighbourhood, interesting place

One of the largest Chinatowns in North America, the area spans from Hastings to about Georgia and from Taylor to Gore (and then it's residential). Lots of great restaurants and stuff down there. Vegetarian, Dim Sum, Traditional and buffet. Some of the old fraternities there are still operating and you can hear the Mah Jong tiles clacking all day.

  • I would suggest that the tag here is slightly racist. Nice job buddy. Chinatown is pretty wicked. Home to a summer night market with lots of great food and street vendors on Friday, Staurday and Sunday nights. Good food and great grocery stores. Chinatown compeletely shuts down at about 6pm though.
  • The original message was changed. My old comment about racism should be ignored. Thanks.
  • Hoi Loik Tuacheng Mai Ka Zhins Kok!
  • these days, Chinatown is pretty down in the dumps. I don't even feel safe walking the streets anymore. Most of the nice restaurants are boarded up and sealed shut, and everywhere you look there's a beggar holding out his/her hand. The city of Vancouver needs to fix up that part of the city. Get some cooperative housing built, rehabilitate the rubbies, etc. In the meantime, I won't be showing Chinatown to any of my visiting friends. I remember when everything was clean and tidy, bustling and enjoyable. Now all the chinatown excitement has moved to Richmond to escape the high rents, rubbies, and vandals. Before thumbing down this comment, take a walk eastbound on Pender starting at Cambie, make a left on Main, then head westbound on E. Hastings. You'll insantly agree with me. I feel sorry for the shopkeepers trying to keep their businesses going, but now, the only advice I can give them is move out, then come back when the City has sorted it out down there. Rant Ended...
