Although not shown in the satellite image yet, this is the Winooski Rotary, or as the sign says, "Turning Circle." Traffic does move a lot more smoothly now, despite the fact the most of the locals still don't know how to deal with it several years after its construction. Watch out for the stoplight. On the eastern side

This is, after all, the first high-volume traffic rotary in the state. Only the flatlanders from Massachusetts and New Jersey know how to get through it without stopping.

Comments

  • Actually the rotary is about half this size - the Main Street downtown buildings on the western side were not torn down to make room for the new traffic rotary.
  • I agree that traffic moves through this intersection more smoothly than it did when it was a traditional intersection with lights, but it remains obvious that the majority of drivers have no clue how to get through a rotary. As much as the locals complain about the way "flatlanders" drive (especially those from Massachusetts), Vermonters could learn something from them about this particular traffic control device.
