The official name of this bridge is the O'Neal Bridge. It was built in 1939 and named for Gov. Edward A. O'Neal of Alabama.
The bridge joins Florence, Alabama, in Lauderdale County, and Sheffield, Alabama, in Colbert County. In addition to serving as Governor, Edward O'Neal was from Florence and he was an officer in the confederate army. He lead his Alabama troops in several campaigns to include Gettysburg.
