Palace Hotel (San Francisco, California)

USA / California / San Francisco / San Francisco, California / New Montgomery Street, 2
hotel, Art Nouveau / Jugendstil (architecture), interesting place, 1909_construction

In 1875, the original Palace Hotel debuted as the world's largest and most luxurious hotel, towering eight stories over San Francisco. The building, which hosted Caruso, was destroyed in the fire that followed the 1906 earthquake. The current hotel was built on the same site in 1909 to designs by Trowbridge & Livingston with metalwork by the Winsow Bros. Company. The hotel operated from 1954 to 1995 as the Sheraton-Palace. President Warren G. Harding died here on August 2, 1923.

A bridge from the old world to the modern city, the Palace recreates the elegance and glamour of early 20th century high society, with its beautiful vaulted ceilings and original Austrian crystal chandeliers. Host to presidents, royalty and giants of industry, the Palace has been lavishly restored with loving attention to its rich past. Famous for Sunday brunch in the glass-domed Garden Court.
