office building, state government, historical building, 1911_construction

The decisions made here affect all public schools in New York State. NYS Regents Exams are created in this building. It has the longest row of consecutive columns out of any building in the United States. The columns provide no actual structural support and are only there for aesthetic beauty.

Construction of the Education Department Building began in 1908 and the building was completed in 1911. A nine story addition was completed on the northeast side of the building in 1959. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

From 1911 to 1976 the building was also home to the New York State Museum and the New York State Library. In 1976 the Museum and Library moved into their own building, the Cultural Eduction Center at the south end of the Empire State Plaza.

Comments

  • The Building was formerly the Empire State Museum, now relocated to the South end of the Empire State Plaza.
  • Oops, I put up the wrong photo. The tall building is the Alfred Smith State Office Building.
