Tisza 2 Power Plant was built between 1972 - 1978, according to the electricity needs forecasted at that time. The gross capacity is 860 MWsplit into 4 individual 215 MW Units. The plant is primarily fueled by natural gas with fuel oil as back up in case of natural gas curtailment.. Because of its need for a large amount of cooling water the plant was built on the bank of the river Tisza. The plant is partially of an open air design. The boilers located outside. .
The turbine generators are protected from bad weather conditions by a convertible steel-constructed casings.
A 250 m high stack was built for the plant. It has a reinforced concrete skeleton with platforms every 25 meters inside. The flue gas flows to the atmosphere through separate steel ducts each 4 meters in diameter. The flue gas ducts are supported at the 150-m level, the thermal expansion of the bottom section of the duct is relieved by expansion joints.
Natural gas is the principal fuel in the plant which is available at a maximum capacity of 240.000 m3/h. The natural gas is delivered to the plant through a pipeline of 800 mm in diameter. When the natural gas supply is curtailed, the plant uses fuel oil. The fuel oil is currently delivered to the plant through pipeline from the Tisza Refinery of MOL Rt.
