The medieval Baghras castle, was called Pagrai by the Byzantines, and Gaston or Gastin (from Greek Kastron) by the Crusaders. It served as an important stronghold for Templars, until taken by Saladin in 1188. Slighted to deny its use to the Third Crusade in 1190, the castle was seized and repaired by a Frankish baron for the ruler of Cilican Armenia, and remained in Armenian possession until 1216, when it was finally ceded back to the Templars. Nevertheless, Templar-Armenian rivalry over possession of the stronghold continued for decades, until in 1268, when the Templars set fire to the castle before the imminent Mamluk conquest.
