Named by William Alcock Tully (1830-1905), surveyor and public servant, while Tully was Commissioner of Crown Lands, Warrego District 1863-64. Tully used an Irish town name, Charleville, located in County Cork near the boundary of County Limerick, currently (1995) known as Rath Luirc. Tully was born and educated in Dublin, Ireland.
