archaeological site, interesting place
A major post-classical Maya site in the northern Yucatan Peninsula. In the early 13th century, under Hunac Ceel, Cocom-ruled Mayapan defeated its rival Chichen Itza and became the leading Maya power in the Yucatan. Mayapan was surrounded by a wall encompassing a sizable area filled with spread out habitations and public structures. The main foci of public buildings are the cluster around the Main Plaza west of center and the Itzmal Ch'en complex near the northeastern corner of the walled area. Archaeological investigation began in 1939, but the vast majority of identified remains remain incompletely explored and overgrown.
