By decree published in the Official Gazette of the State of Yucatan on June 8, 1999, it was declared a natural protected area with the character of a State Park, the region known as Lagunas de Yalahau, located in the municipalities of Homún, Huhí, Tekit and Sotuta, in the State of Yucatán, with an area of 5,683.28 hectares.
It is located in the central region of the state, approximately 60 km from the city of Mérida, arriving by the Mérida-Mayapan highway, and following the deviation to Acanceh, passing through this town, Eknakán, Cuzamá and finally Homún.
The main access road to the park is located in the east exit of Homún towards the Municipality of Huhí, 2 km after leaving the town of Homún, take a deviation signposted towards the south, where 13 kms of dirt road are crossed until reaching the main lagoon called Yalahau, which indicates the northern entrance to the park.
It is considered a priority site for the conservation of flora and fauna biodiversity; besides that it has historical, archaeological and cultural relevance, since it includes within its limits archaeological remains immersed in vegetation of low deciduous forest mixed with species of low flood forest, tulares and transition vegetation; It has lagoons of natural beauty and great geohydrological importance for the entity to be in the center of the state and the ring of cenotes of the state; It harbors a mixture of humid forest species and arid zones of particular characteristics in the State and we observe the presence of species that are under some state of protection and that are endemic to the Yucatan peninsula.
The Park circumscribes a total of 4 lagoons and several cenotes (a total of 203) that house species of socioeconomic importance and under the category of threatened species according to the Official Mexican Standard ( NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2001 ).
Due to the richness of its ecosystems and state of conservation, on February 2, 2007, it was declared Wetland of International Importance RAMSAR.
For the administration of the site, the collaboration of the Municipality of Homún is now available to ensure the inspection and surveillance of the site, as well as the protection of the field facilities; and it has the participation of an ecotourism community group formed by members of the Homún ejido, for the provision of visitor services.
