Srisailam referred to as Tirupparuppatham in the Thevaram hymns, near Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh is a venerated Shivastalam, the second of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines spread all over India, the Northernmost one being Kedarnath and the Southern most being Rameswaram. Sree Sailam is the first of the Thevara Koil hailed by the Tamil hymns of the Nayanmars, located outside of Tamilnadu/Kerala/Karnataka i.e. in Vada Naadu (the northern lands).
This is a vast temple with several gopurams, on a hill which is said to be a manifestation of Nandi. This temple has been a site of Vijayanagar patronage, and is currently well visited and well endowed. Several other related Siva temples are located in the vicinity of Sree Sailam. Kannada poetess Akkamahadevi made this spot her hermitage. (She is like, yes like Mira, sho adored Sri Krishna).
Sambandar and Sundarar have sung its glories from Sree Kaalahasti. Adi Sankara is believed to have visited this shrine.
Other Temples to Visit at Srisailam: Akka Mahadevi caves (12th Century AD) - Accessible via motorboat ride and has a Shiva Linga deep inside the caves.
Hemareddy Mallamma Temple, a half kilometer on the western side of the Mallikarjuna Temple. The place is visited by lakhs of pilgrims who offer prayers at this temple.
Besides temples, the area is surrounded with Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary. Srisailam Dam is well visited by guests staying overnight.
