Hicks Nurseries (Westbury, New York)

USA / New York / Westbury / Westbury, New York / New York State Route 25 (Jericho Turnpike), 100
 garden centre, plant nursery

Isaac Hicks originally owned much of the property around the current nursery. His family dates back to the 1600s. The Hicks were prominent Quaker farmers in the area and Hicksville is named after them. Isaac Hicks established the business in 1853.

At the turn of the century, Isaac’s son Edward, who taught at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, invented and patented the equipment for moving big trees desired by Long Island’s new estate owners. Full grown trees - sometimes in full leaf - were carefully extracted from the earth and taken primarily to the Gold Coast mansions, where many still flourish today. Some of the pin oak trees they planted in the 20's were propagated from an arboretum in Roslyn of William Cullen Bryant.
