Soyanggang Dam owned and operated by Korea Water Resources Corporation is an embankment dam on the Soyang River, 10 km/6mi northeast of Chuncheon. The dam provides flood control, water supply, and hydroelectric power. Construction on the dam began in 1967 and was complete in 1973.
The 123m /404ft high 530m/1,739 ft long dam has a reservoir that can hold up to a maximum of 9,600,000m3 /12,556,326 cu yd.
Three Francis-type turbines provide 200 MW of hydro-electric power. Francis turbines are a type of water turbine that is an inward-flow reaction turbine that combines radial and axial flow concepts. Francis turbines are the most common water turbine in use today.
