mountain, green area
Yonghwasan (Dragon Fire Mountain) is located approximately 12 miles north of the city of Chuncheon and about 6 miles south-south-east of the city of Hwacheon, both of which are in Kangweon Province. At the foot of the mountain's south slope, situated at the head of a stream, is a government-run nature resort (자연휴양림) which is a low-cost auto-camping and cottage-stay recreation area. It is a great place for hiking and camping. During the Korean War elements of the 39th Army of the Chinese Communist Forces probably occupied the ridgeline to defend against the United Nation's Command Operation Ripper; traces of the trenches and battle positions can be found on the south and southwest military crest of the ridgeline. See Map #26 on Billy Mossman's "Ebb and Flow: November 1950 - July 1951" on the US Army's Center for Military History website (www.history.army.mil/books/korea/ebb/fm.htm).
