This Safeway replaced an outdated "Marina" variant from the 1960s (24,000 square feet), small enough that it didn't even have a pharmacy (which was located across the street). It was demolished, along with a 76 gas station at the corner, for a new 45,500 square foot store with integrated parking. It finally opened in January 2015, being a large store with a design that gives a nod back to the original Marina design. In addition to bringing to a close a redevelopment that stalled numerous times and was redesigned over the last past 8 years due to neighborhood resistance, it was the last Safeway opened as an independent company before they were acquired by Albertsons (and probably one of the last new-build "Lifestyle" stores). Truly an end of an era.
