For many years, a Japanese garden was the dream of many San Diegans, some of whom recall the original Japanese tea house. It was built in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition. After the Exposition, strong community interest kept the Japanese Tea Pavilion open for thirty years. The first phase of the Garden site of two acres was opened in 1991 and the second phase completed in 1999. Currently work is underway to develop an additional nine acres. Work is expected to be completed by 2014. Once finished, it will be one of the largest Japanese gardens in the United States.
