St. Mary's Church, Poovaranthode

St.Mary's Catholic Church is located at a small village called Poovaranthode in the District of Calicut (Kozhikode) in Kerala, Inida. The Village is about 1,500 feet above sea level and is home for about 250 families of which about 180 are Cathoics. Others are either Hindus or Muslims. St. Mary's Church is the spiritual home of the local Catholic families. People living here trace their roots to Central Kerala. They are farmers who cultivate spices like black pepper, Cardamom, Ginger, cloves etc along with coca, coffee, arrocanut and coconut. The Village is about 70 Kilometeres from Calicut by bus and the nearest town with a high school is Koodaranhi which is about seven kilometeres away. St. Mary's Church was erected in 1976 (?) and is a parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Thamaracherry.(information entered by Fr. Jaison Mangalath, SVD)
