The castle was built in the 14th century by Kęstutis, the Duke of Lithuania in the peninsula of the southern shore of Lake Galvė. The castle is undergoing restoration, some of the walls and towers remain. There is an exposition of sacred art, set up in the former chapel of a Dominican cloister, now forming a part of the castle's ensemble, which was established there in 1678 by the initiative of the Voivod of Trakai Martynas Aleksandras Oginskis (Marcjan Aleksander Ogiński).
