The Cevendish Level (mine working) was driven in the 1840s to drain the quarries. It was then re-excavated in the 1980s and widened for use of road traffic to serve as the quarries' main entrance. However it's no longer used as the quarry workings have now gone 90ft below the end of the tunnel.
