Nanda Devi Massif

India / Uttaranchal / Joshimath /

Nanda Devi is the second tallest mountain in India(excluding Pakistan administered Kashmir), the tallest wholly in India(Kanchenjunga is partially in Nepal), and 23rd in the world. Its name means bliss-giving Goddess. The peak is regarded as the Patron Goddess of the Uttarakhand Himalayas, and is sitated in Uttaranchal state.
The mountain actually contains two peaks with the west one at 7816m, and the lower east one at 7434m. Nanda Devi stands guarded by a barrier ring of the high mountains in the Garwhal Himalayas, 12 of which exceed 6,400 m (21,000 ft) in height, further elevating its sacred status as the daughter of the Himalaya in local myth and folklore

The peak is srrounded by the NandaDevi Sanctuary which along with the peak is kept closed for general public(except intermittent army patrolling), in order to prevent damage to the area by human actiivty

In first week of Oct 2007, a 25 strong party of Indian Army mountaineers, in their attempt to scale the peak were caught in a snow storm with 5 of them including the lead Maj Shyamal Sinha, going missing to never be found again.
