Bibanga Station is an activity center for Congolese Presbyterians in this area. It was established by the American Presbyterian Congo Mission (APCM) with the support of the local Tshiluba-speaking Bakwa Kanda in 1917. It was named for nearby 'bibanga' trees. Clustered around the Presbyterian Church building are boarding schools for boys and girls, a nursing school, and a hospital. Bibanga Health Zone (district), one of about 400 under the Congolese Ministry of Health, is centered on Bibanga Hospital. In addition to hospital medical services, the Bibanga health team assists community health organizations in promoting public health.
