Navy nuclear propulsion lab, owned by the Department of Energy, and operated by Westinghouse. Engaged in research and development into nuclear propulsion plants, and has a lab and field test facility at the Naval Reactors Facility, within the Idaho National Engineering Lab, in Idaho. The installation employs around 3,500 people and covers 210 acres outside of Pittsburgh.

For more than 50 years, the Bettis Laboratory has been developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology and providing technical support to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the nation's submarine and aircraft carrier fleets. The Bettis Laboratory is operated for the Department of Energy by Bechtel Bettis Inc.

The Bettis Laboratory is solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, which is a joint Navy-DOE program responsible for the research, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of U.S. nuclear-powered warships.
