New artificial island being built.Reclaimed from sea in existing shallow area. Reclamation is in 3 phases. Phase one has been completed, and Phase two is underway. Housing blocks have been built and occupied by citizens who do not own land in the capital or in new-by villingili. Purpose of Hulhumale was to ease population burden of Male (currently population of 90,000 with an additional floating population of more than 40,000) and also to provide higher ground (Hulhumale is being built 3metres above sea level, whereas most islands in Maldives are a mere 1 metre above sea level) inc ase of rising sea levels or another Tsunami.
