Area Support Unit (ASU) Chilliwack was established in September 1997 as part of a downsizing of Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Chilliwack and is housed in the buildings once occupied by 1 Combat Engineer Regiment. ASU Chilliwack consists of 46 military and 19 civilian personnel. ASU Chilliwack’s mission is to support units located on mainland British Columbia to help them fulfil their mandated activities.

ASU Chilliwack provides direct support using basic resources such as personnel, equipment and material. The ASU manages and arranges for the maintenance of and support to Canadian Forces properties and leased interests located on mainland British Columbia including facilities infrastructure, ranges, training areas and other real property.

ASU Chilliwack has a similar span of responsibilities as that of its predecessor, CFB Chilliwack; however, its depth is extremely limited, with some trades only represented by a single person. Those in charge of specific sections are required to act as functional heads or subject matter experts in the full spectrum of their respective areas, with all the associated authority and responsibilities.

Most dependencies do not lie in the immediate vicinity of ASU Chilliwack. Although most dependencies are located in the Greater Vancouver area, a number are located in the interior of British Columbia. Consequently, significant efforts and resources are required to deliver this long-range support.

  • Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the decision then.
