Gávea Rock, also know as Barra Rock, is a gneiss rock with granite top going as high as 842 meters above sea level (2.762 feet) what makes this the highest waterfront rock of the world.

The view it has from the top is consider by some the most spectacular view from Rio de Janeiro. From the top we can see all borough of Barra da Tijuca (Barra, Recreio, Itanhangá, Vargens e Jacarepaguá). We can also see the neighborhood of São Conrado, Ipanema, Leblon, Lagoa and even Niterói, a city next by Rio.

The citizens of Barra, or Barristas, refer to it by "The sleeping Giant" because of the resemblance of the rock with a laying down men.

There is some mystic history about the rock because of the alleged Phoenician writing. There is also a resemblance with a face on one of the sides that would have been made by man.
