Petrópolis is a Brazilian city in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The size in area is 774.606 km² and population of 302,.477 people (2004, IBGE).

The city has 5 districts: Petrópolis, Cascatinha, Itaipava, Pedro do Rio, and Posse.

Petrópolis is located 42 km from the state capital (Rio de Janeiro) on highway BR-040 and 463 km from the city of São Paulo.

The city's mild climate, historical buildings and abundant vegetation are the main tourist attractions. The city is a commercial center for service, agricultural and industrial products.

Petrópolis is known as the “Imperial City”. Emperor Dom Pedro II constructed his summer palace here to escape from the hot climate of Rio de Janeiro in the summer in the 19th century. The city was the official capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro between 1894 and 1903.
