Charaideo was the original capital of the Ahom Kings built by Sukhapa the founder of the dynasty in about 1229 CE. Charaideo is famous for its numerous maidams (burial vaults) of the kings and members of the royal family resembling the pyramids of Egypt. Most of them were build of stones and bricks. There are three or four probable site of the ancient capital complex. This is one of those.

  • Charaideo <Che-Ra:i-Doi, Tai-Ahom word, means "a prominent city on the hill top" (Che =a city, rai = prominent, doi =hill) Early name of Cheraidoi was "Bihaga:dripa:ha:r" of Borahi rulers. Austric king Sungsaumara was the first ruler of this region. Virochan, Chandrahash, Vikramadityapha, Bicharpatipha, Pokhra were Borahi rulers of this region. The Borahi rulers founded two capitals close to Charaideo @ Chera:idoi @ Bihagadripahar called "Sona:pur" and "Ba:npur". The Ta:i-A:hom first king Chaolung Siukapha A.D. 1228-1268 ruled this area and founded his capital at this place also curved out the country of Mung-dun-chun-kham, a country full of garden of gold (Assam) stationing at this place whose descedants ruled this country up to A.D. 1838 till termination of their government by the British Government. Chera:doi was a part of old Pagarjotic, Uparipattan, Pragjytisha, Kamrupa, Saumarpitha, Dimalang etc. Charaideo @ "Chera:idoi" is known as "Jerusalem of the East" for its location of Moidams i.e., Vaults of the Ta:i-A:hom kings, the Queens and the nobles. In medieval times, Bihagadripahar @ Cheraidoi @ Charaideo was the hotseat of the Borahi, the Ta:i-A:hom rulers. Atleast eleven Ta:i-A:hom kings ruled from here prior to shifting of the capital to "Che-re-gua", a city situated between the two rivers. The important historical places like -Bantung, Bantinkhen, Banchang, Tungkhang, Amalakhi Devalaya rest close to Chera:idoi. The famous Me-da:m-me-phi, i.e., offering prayers to the deads held annually with great rituals and celebrity by the Tai-A:hom population since the days of Cha:lung Siuka:pha: A.D. 1228-68.

  • I am searching for a place where Assam Tourism Dev. Corp made a Charaideo- Sukafa Complex. The project included of a) Museum of the Journey of the Ahoms, b) Construction of various structures depicting the journey of Yunnan via Laos, Thailand, Myanmar to reach Charaideo etc.
