Old Basing is a village which is just seperate from Basingstoke although it largely acts as a suburb. Originally it was known as 'Basing' until the town of Basingstoke was rapidly developed. When the area was first settled, Basing was the home of the Basingas tribe with Basingstoke being a secondary settlement, but this soon changed.
It is famous for the ruins of Old Basing house, besieged during the Civil War. Some buildings around Old Basing House were repaired using bricks from the house afterwards. Not all buildings are historic however, as some houses date from the '60s or later and there are new developments (now complete) to the south.
